Children's Program of Study

The annual children’s program of study consists of two semesters; each semester runs for 19 weeks.

A student may begin pre-ballet classes after reaching his/her fourth birthday.

The program is based on the syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), which has its headquarters in London, England.

The RAD graded program begins with two pre-ballet classes and eight graded classes following them. Both age and accomplishment contribute to the teachers’ placement suggestions. Concurrently with the upper grade children’s classes, a student may elect to participate in RAD’s pre-professional program, called the Vocational syllabus. It consists of six grades*.

Annual examinations in the RAD program are optional for students in all grades. Examinations in the children’s syllabi are given at the studio, usually during Spring. Examiners are assigned by RAD headquarters and travel to schools world-wide; this helps maintain uniform levels of expectation and accomplishment. Vocational grade examinations typically involve out-of-state travel to the assigned Midwest examination center.

1. *The sixth Vocational grade is for students who have already reached a professional level of technical achievement, and is called Solo Seal.
